Practice this SAFETY DRILL at home
- Make certain to
establish at least 2 different ways to safely exit your home in case of any
- Take the time to practice this drill with your entire family NOW, so
that in case of an emergency, it will be natural to you and your loved ones.
- Here's the drill for all to learn from: Try this first during the daytime - place
a bandana over your eyes to create total darkness. Simulate a normal nightime
situation by going to bed, closing your door, and drawing the blinds/curtains
shut. Pretend you hear your smoke detector alerting you to a problem in your
home. SLIDE OUT OF BED, don't stand up (staying close to the floor will provide
a cooler environment with less smoke to deal with). After sliding out of bed,
get down on your hands and knees and spin around in a circle 5 times (to
simulate the disorientation you will feel if awaken from a sound sleep during an
emergency). Now try to find your way out of your room, and out of your home via
the shortest - safest route - AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. You would be surprised to
find that many people are unable to do so.
- Once you leave the house, alert 911 from a
neighbors home. DO NOT re-enter the building for any reason! Designate a meeting
place for all family members to congregate after exiting the home.
This simple drill is designed to increase your awareness of planning a safe exit.
Remember practice now, survive longer!
